What are the best practices for marketing an iPhone app?

I agree that it all starts with creating an app that is enchanting and remarkable.

But, here's a list of free techniques that you can also do:

1. Create a landing page

It's never too early to start building a following. Setup your landing page to collect signups and start building interest in your app.

Make sure your landing page has the following characteristics:

  • Minimizing distractions and driving site visitors to perform one action: entering their email.
  • Providing a clean and simple design to effectively get your app's messaging across.
  • Including a built-in tool that encourages site visitors to share your app with their friends.
  • Optimizing your page for website visitors that may be viewing your site from desktops, laptops, mobile or tablet devices.

2. Setup Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr - Setup your pages and start sharing content from your Tumblr blog as you create your blog. Your blog could act as a behind the scenes element during your app's creation. You can simplify management of these tools using IFTTT (http://ifttt.com)

3. Create a demo video - A demo video for your app is like a spicy trailer for a box office movie. An extremely important piece of content in the lead-up to launching your app. It quickly helps people understand what your app does, helps convert people into users, and gives the press some extra content ammo to write about your launch. Grumo Media (http://grumomedia.com) has some more helpful tips

4. Write your press release - Your press release is like a guide for journalists to know the key points about your app.

5. Prepare the rest of your press kit

As you get ready to contact journalists, having a press kit on hand is extremely important. Don't make journalists go around and find screenshots or info about your app. If they express interest in your app and ask you for followup info, respond right away with a .zip file of your press kit.

Your press kit should include:

  • Your press release
  • Icon (with sizes 56x56, 114x114, 256x256, 512x512)
  • Screenshots
  • Marketing images (if you have them)
  • Team pic(s) (if you have them)

6. Target press leads

App review and press sites are not created equal. Some will convert much better than others and certain journalists will be much more interested in your app than others. It's important to identify app review sites that fit your app's niche.

I wrote more on this over here: If you hate trying to get press, read this. Now.

7. Pitching the press

8. Prepare App Store submission

9. Use Twitter to continuously find more customers

Target keywords on Twitter for people that are talking about the problem that you're solving.

For example, if your app helps people locate lost keys, try entering "lost" "keys" in the Twitter search and communicate with them through your app's Twitter account.
